|Behind the Mask|
Both thin and very pale, Merrill does not at first give the impression of one accustomed to either the outdoors or much physical activity. The intricate tattoos that adorn her face add a mystical touch to her appearance, which might bring the imagination to think of her as a scholarly mage, poring over tomes in search of knowledge... In fact, this imagining is not at all far from the truth.
Her Dalish origins remain visible in her clothes, as her favorite outfit is a primarily green and brown outfit that signifies her status as Keeper's First. Even when not wearing this outfit, she shows a preference toward these colors- Though interestingly, also toward the color white, though no traditional Dalish garb has this as a dominant color.
Originally born to the Alerion clan in Nevarra, Merrill was given at a young age to the Sabrae clan, to be the First to Keeper Marethari. From then on, she lived with the clan in the Brecilian Forest, more concerned with her studies than anything else, making only a few friends within the clan.
One day, her friends Tamlen and Theron went out, and didn't come back. Two days later, humans came, and attacked the camp. The clan was able to defend themselves, but they knew it was time to leave... However, Merrill didn't want to leave Tamlen and Theron behind. With the Keeper's permission, she went searching, told where the new campsite would be.
Searching in the area that Tamlen and Theron had been heading toward, Merrill eventually stumbled upon a cave. Looking inside, she found ancient elven ruins. Within those ruins she found darkspawn and undead, centered around an eluvian... In front of which was Tamlen's bow, broken upon the ground. ...She knew something was wrong here. Clearing away the creatures, she searched the ruins further, but found nothing, besides the mirror... Her friends were no longer here, and she sensed something was wrong with the mirror.
What had happened here? This question echoing in her mind, her determination was reinforced, and she set off anew to find her friends... She would save them, and she would return to camp with them.
